a general history of private investigators

Private Detectives have been around since time immemorial, whenever someone has needed to find someone, or to watch someone, a private eye was used.

It's generally accepted that the first Private Investigator "agency" was formed by Eugène François Vidocq, a frenchman and soldier in 1833. His agency was called "Le Bureau des Renseignements Universels pour le commerce et l'Industrie" and he generaly hired ex-convicts and for this reason the authorities tried to shut his agency down.

WHAT DO PRIVATE INVESTIGATORS DO?

Private Investigators perform a variety of tasks that no one else can do.

PROCESS SERVICES: The bread and butter of any agency is process serving which is the serving of legal documents on behalf of the courts and or claimants. The recipients usually do not want to be served and tend to try and evade being served by the process server. Generally speaking, it's impossible to evade being served in the UK.

PRIVATE INVESTIGATORS IN FICTION

The most famous fictional PI has got to be Sir Alan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes who had his offices at 22b Baker Street, London. A brilliant London-based private investigator, Sherlock Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess, and is renowned for his skillful use of "deductive reasoning" while using abductive reasoning (inference to the best explanation) and astute observation to solve difficult cases.
